Excuses Only Hurt You!

6/13/2014

Do you REALLY want to be healthy?
Picture
There comes a point when we look in the mirror and ask ourselves, "Is that REALLY me?"  If we can, honestly, look into that mirror and decide we WANT to continue on this way, likely to gain 5 - 10 pounds more, each and every year, then so be it...

If we, truly, wish to become healthy, we WILL purpose to make a permanent change... and we WILL stick to it.  THERE IS NO IN-BETWEEN.

To be successful, we must decide to just DO what needs doing!  No more excuses.  No more looking into that mirror - hating what we see, yet "loving" the food combinations which brought us to this point.

If we, truly, wish to become healthy, we WILL purpose to make a permanent change... and we WILL stick to it.
As an Admin for Trim Health Mama, I see common excuses posted regularly… and, in an effort to be “real” with you, most of these excuses are simply what we say when we wish to avoid taking the responsibility for our own health.  I do not write this in judgment, but because I have walked this journey before you.

“IT TAKES TOO MUCH TIME TO COOK!”
Nope.  Better review that recipe section again!  Implementing Trim Healthy Mama correctly, we can make up a healthy snack or meal in a matter of minutes.  In other words, we can make a healthy meal in the time it takes to scarf down a bowl of Fruit Loops...  So "scheduling", honestly, isn't a valid excuse.

Of course, for those who love the kitchen, THM is not just about “convenience”.   In the instance you desire something "incredible”, you can spend all day in the kitchen, whipping up mouthwatering masterpieces – worthy of serving your family, friends... the first course to disappear at potlucks!

“MY <INSERT HEALTH ISSUE> IS WHY I HAVE GAINED WEIGHT!”
Overweight or obese people often use an injury or illness as the excuse for their weight-gain, and/or their inability to lose.  Again, no judgment, as I have been here myself.

The truth is, we simply must get past the excuse stage and face REALITY:  Most of us are overweight and/or obese, not specifically because of a health issue or an inability to exercise - but because of our OWN choices.

Eating correctly does NOT require the ability to run a 5K; hike a tall mountain; do kettle-bells; T-Tap...  Quite frankly, eating correctly doesn't even require the ability to walk!  "HEALTH" simply demands that we put the right food into our mouths... and stop consuming the foods which put us into this unhealthy state.

“IT IS TOO EXPENSIVE!”
I completely understand financial limitations -- but I am also here to tell you, there ARE ways to make THM work - even on an exceptionally tight budget.  Protein provides stamina that cheap, empty carbs do not.  I may be able to purchase a bag of chips for less than the cost of 3 eggs and veggies… but the healthy option will carry me far longer than empty carbs/sugars.  In honesty, it requires LESS healthy food to satiate hunger, while nourishing and healing the body.

"OFF-PLAN FOODS AND CHEATS ARE NOT MY PROBLEM!”
I can tell you from experience, wrong food combinations are, indeed, what brought you here - and if you are continuing to bring these foods to your lips, this practice is, indeed, causing your health issues.

Some people state the THM portion-sizes are the true culprit for stalls and/or weight gain...  Perhaps you are simply not eating commonsense portions?  There is no need to feel "hungry" or "deprived" on THM, as portions are incredibly generous... but some people DO struggle with serious over-eating.  If you are doubling portions or eating multiple portions of dessert... then take the time to drink a tall glass of GGMS or a Shrinker before your snacks and meals.  Beginning your meal well-hydrated WILL gratify with smaller food portions.

“BUT I JUST CAN’T PASS UP <CHIPS, CAKE, SODA, FRIES, COOKIES, CANDY>!”
When you look in that full-length mirror, do you feel happy with the reflection looking back at you?  Are you “trim” and “healthy”?  "Who do you want to see... and who do you want to be?"

Temptation is nothing but a thing to say, "NO!" to.  So you are craving something unhealthy?  SO WHAT!?  Put something healthy in its place.  Your body will soon crave what truly nourishes it.!

Thank you for your timely post. I've "done" THM for a year and a half now. Only thing is, I really only did if for the first 4 or 5 months full-time, honestly and truly. The rest of the time I've been making excuses and getting on and off every few weeks. Sometimes lasting a month or more on plan before totally blowing it for a week or two. I've made choices, and now see the image in the mirror that I had once lost. I know THM works, and yes, I have thyroid issues. It works, even with health issues, but being consistent is the key. Thank you for this timely post. I just told my husband a couple days ago that I was done making excuses and just eating. Today is day 2 to be fully back on plan.

Temptations will come, a plenty, I know. But with each temptation, I have a choice. Just today I agreed to keep accountable with a friend of mine who will be having to work much harder at eating healthy that I do this summer. Her family travels for a small Bible School in the summer, and their food choices are often limited to what is set before them. Accountability helps me to stay focused, so I thank God he sent me someone to hold me accountable when I was to embarrassed to ask my friends again.

Portion sizes are a huge downfall for me. However, that is also a choice. It really helps to get past the first week or so of eating better, then it seems like you are past the hardest hill, and it is possible to do. For me the temptations are fewer when I have already made it past the first few days for sure.

Jasmine ~ I am so proud of you for digging in and making a healthy choice - not just for yourself, but for your family.

Starting over again can be hard... but when I started, it was kind of methodical in that I just DID IT. Know what I mean? No real fanfare, I just determined that I was DONE hating my reflection, DONE not being able to physically do what I wanted...

For myself, I think the success came with really sticking to the book. I am all for "grace", but I (personally) needed the security and accountability of eating the recipes, as written. I needed to eat according to the meal types and not eat "cheats" - because sugar (in the form of white sugar, white flour, corn, white rice, etc) in any amounts created cravings that were fierce.

Having an accountability partner can make such a difference. <3

Jaque - this was so well worded! I am sharing this on my FB page and our local THM FB page as I think it is not only challenging to those who are sitting on the "good health fence" but also encouraging to those who are just getting started on their journey to life long good health. Blessings!

Thank you! I know, for some, this will really resonate with them. We HAVE to be honest with ourselves before we can ever make the change necessary.

I totally agree and am plodding along the THM plan and found myself down 2 pant sizes! Amazing for someone who "isn't a cook" and hasn't been exercising but just more active.... meaning NOT sitting for long periods in my chair. The truth really does set you free and getting honest with yourself is a great place to start! Thank you for this posting of the truth!

Nancy! Two pants sizes!! That is SO exciting... Just eating right feels so good... but seeing the clothing sizes shrink is such a boost! <3

Honesty that needed to be heard by these ears! Life is full of choices and we just need to make the ones that lead us towards our goals. I sometimes need to remind myself that it is my own goal of a healthier lifestyle that my choices sabotage. Thank you for the reminder that excuses should not get in the way of positive choices.

Thank you. Day one today. Again. I've been on and off for 2 years. It's one month until Thanksgiving.

I am going to stick with this!

I needed a strong word today.

Blessings,
Laura of Harvest Lane Cottage
